JetSetMe is a visualisation of the almost real-time roaming habits of mobile phones using SIM cards on O2's network (including MVNOs) while roaming in Europe. Brought to you by The Lab.
When a mobile phone crosses into a different country a message is sent to its home network letting that network know that the phone is in another country. We're simply using information that we need to run and operate the network. That information is shown here as a visualisation. Check out our JetSetMe video here
Are you stalking me ?
No, any network operator knows when a mobile phone is abroad on another network, and that's what is represented here.
Are you using my personal data ?
No, JetSetMe uses anonymous data provided by the network, it doesn't know where an individual customer might be.
Is this real-time ?
Almost, it is as close as we can get to a real time display of the data available to us.
Why did you make JetSetMe ?
We wanted to make an interesting visualisation of how mobile phones move around the world. We think we can offer some great customer benefits by using the data smartly but we wanted to share the information with you first on JetSetMe
How accurate is the data ?
The data is taken directly from the network. We typically use this kind of information to run the network and route calls and texts to the right phone in the right location. The data on the site becomes more accurate over time, as people complete trips abroad and return home. And, of course, the data doesn’t include people who leave their phone at home when they travel!
Will there be an API ?
Yes, we’ve built an API at https://api.jetsetme.com to allow developers, third parties and business customers to build interesting applications and products using data available via the API. In particular we are interested from hearing third parties who would like to work with us on developing the API or collaborating with us more closely on products and services. We think there are some exciting possibilities in the Travel and Financial Services sectors. You can get in touch with us at feedback at JetSetMe
It’s great to have data for O2’s customers but what about the other networks?
We’re working on that one, watch this space!
I work for a charity / NGO and we’ve thought of a good way we could use this data for the public good, can we get access?
We are happy to consider requests for access to the data, under agreed contractual terms for organisations that wish to use the data for the public or social good. You can contact us at feedback at JetSetMe
